Couples' fashion!

Posted on 03 February 2016

As we approach Valentine’s Day it got me thinking of some of the fashion traditions that I witnessed growing up in Ivory Coast with Nigerian parents. In a lot of West African cultures, it is customary for couples to go out together dressed in outfits made of the same fabric. In my house, I can remember my parents’ clothes made out of the same fabric. Even today, my husband and I have outfits handmade with the same fabric that we occasionally wear out together. For our traditional wedding in Nigeria (yes, we have had more than 1 wedding), my mom had our outfits handmade with the same fabric, a peach lace with blue flowers. My husband wasn’t exactly a fan of this particular outfit, but I was proud of him for sticking it out for our wedding.  Here is a picture of the fabric that was used for our wedding.
