My name is Doris and I am the owner of Ichiakor Designs. I started this venture when my mother came to visit my family for the summer from Ivory Coast. I purchased a sewing machine so that she could make a few traditional outfits for me and others while she was here visiting. Eventually my mom went back to Ivory Coast but the sewing machine was still here. I started dabbling in sewing. I had watched my mom sew since I was a little child and figured I knew enough just from watching to be able to make some things. Shortly after, while I was pregnant with my daughter, I took a sewing class and made a pillow with my daughter's name on it for her room. That's when I really discovered my passion for sewing.
With creating this business, I wanted to make something that reflects where I came from with a modern twist to it. I, therefore started working with African wax print fabric. I love colors! The bolder the color the better for me! And I love the African fabric's many different prints and their uniqueness. In West Africa, people use this fabric to create complete outfits. It's bold, colorful, loud, and attention grabbing, all a part of my culture.
I thought it would be great to use this fabric to create items that we use in our everyday life to add a little flair and pop! I am a colorful and fun person, and these products just fit my personality. If you like something that is a little bit different than what everyone else has, then I think my products are for you!!!
I like to personally select and feel the product before making anything with them. If the fabric isn’t good enough for me, then it most certainly isn’t good enough for you.
